Kazakhstan’s Citizens Are Meat Lovers: Meat and Meat Product Consumption Up by 2%

In January–September of the current year, Kazakhstan produced 57.3 thousand tonnes of fresh or chilled meat from cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, and other equines — 7.6% less than in the same period of 2024.
Beef and veal traditionally accounted for the largest share of total meat production, amounting to 30.3 thousand tonnes compared to 36.2 thousand tonnes a year earlier — a notable year-on-year decline of 16.3%. Pork also represented a significant share: 21.9 thousand tonnes, up by 12.9% compared to the first nine months of 2024.
In addition, during January–September of the current year, Kazakhstan produced 3.1 thousand tonnes of horse meat, 1.8 thousand tonnes of mutton, and 12 tonnes of goat meat.

As for the appetite of Kazakhstan’s population, in the second quarter of the current year citizens consumed an average of 20.6 kilograms of meat and meat products per capita — 1.8% more than in the same period of 2024.
By type of meat, beef accounted for the largest share of consumption — 6.3 kilograms per person. It was followed by horse meat (1.5 kilograms), mutton (1.3 kilograms), chicken (1.3 kilograms), and pork (815 grams).
Among meat products, in the second quarter of the current year, an average Kazakhstan citizen consumed 1.9 kilograms of minced meat, 1 kilogram of semi-smoked sausage, 629 grams of sausages and frankfurters, 618 grams of boiled sausage, 189 grams of beef liver, 48 grams of semi-finished meat products, and 40 grams of lard.
Regionally, the highest per capita consumption of meat and meat products was recorded in the Mangystau Region — 25.2 kilograms per person in the second quarter of the current year, up by 3.8% year-on-year. It was followed by the Zhetysu (25.2 kilograms), Akmola (24.1 kilograms), Karaganda (23.8 kilograms), and Kostanay (23.3 kilograms) Regions.
The lowest consumption of meat and meat products in the second quarter of 2025 was observed in the Kyzylorda Region — 15 kilograms per person, compared to 16.2 kilograms a year earlier. Similarly modest figures were recorded in Shymkent and the Turkistan Region — 15.1 and 15.6 kilograms, respectively.

Meanwhile, retail prices for meat and meat products in the country rose by 2.7% month-on-month and by 19.1% year-on-year as of September of the current year.
Meat and poultry increased in price by 3% over the month, including beef by 3.6%, horse meat by 2.9%, pork and mutton by 2.5%, and poultry by 1.8%. Sausages rose by an average of 1.5%, with boiled sausage up by 1.6% and semi-smoked sausage by 1.1%. Prices for other meat products increased by 2.7%.
Year-on-year, meat and poultry prices rose by 20.9%, including beef by 28.4%, horse meat by 13.5%, pork by 9.8%, mutton by 25.9%, and poultry by 9.1%. Sausages went up by 9.5%, including boiled sausage by 10.2% and semi-smoked sausage by 8.8%. Meat-based products became 21.2% more expensive.
Regionally, in September, monthly price increases for meat and meat products were recorded across all regions of Kazakhstan. The sharpest monthly rise was observed in the West Kazakhstan (4.9%), North Kazakhstan (4.2%), and Aktobe (4.0%) Regions, while the smallest was in the Turkistan Region (1.4%).
In annual terms, the highest growth in meat and meat product prices was recorded in Shymkent (29.4%), as well as in the Ulytau (27.8%) and West Kazakhstan (24.9%) Regions. The lowest increase was observed in Almaty (11.6%), as well as in the Kostanay and Pavlodar Regions (14.4% in each).
